Designer: Maurice BurkeManufacturer: Arkana, Scotland
Requires restoration before being sold
An early example of the iconic “Chelsea” Safari chair designed by Maurice Burke for Arkana in the 1960s, complete with its original matching footstool. This striking lounge set features a black leather seat and backrest, sling armrests, and elegant ebonised supports joined by tubular stretchers.
With its campaign-style construction and adaptable design, the chair allows the sitter to remain upright or gently recline by shifting forward, where the backrest pivots slightly to enhance the lounge experience. Makers’ marks can be found to the undersides of both chair and stool.
This is a rare opportunity to own an early edition of a British design classic, refined, functional, and deeply comfortable.
About the DesignerMaurice Burke began his career in the U.S. as a salesman for Herman Miller before founding Burke Inc. in 1959. He relocated to Britain in 1963 to establish Arkana in Falkirk, Scotland—best known for producing modernist furniture influenced by international trends. The Chelsea chair drew inspiration from Dutch Army campaign chairs, reimagined in sleek timber and leather for modern interiors.
Arkana was acquired in the late 1960s by the Christie Tyler Group, who moved production to Bath under the Avalon and Bath Cabinet Makers brands.
ConditionStructurally sound. The wood needs repainting and either a partial or full reupholster. contact us to discuss.
