Story Behind the Art: Indo-Kashan rugs are an elegant Indian interpretation of the legendary Kashan carpets originally woven for the Safavid courts of 16th-century Iran. Produced today in major Indian weaving centers such as Jaipur and Bhadohi, these hand-knotted wool rugs translate royal Persian design into a form suitable for modern homes. Indo-Kashan rugs are celebrated for their formal balance, classical symmetry, and timeless appeal. Most examples feature the iconic Medallion-and-Corner layout—often compared to a book-cover composition—with a central diamond medallion surrounded by dense floral vines, palmettes, and arabesques. Some variations display the Shah Abbas pattern, an allover floral arrangement without a central medallion. Typically woven at approximately 150 to 250 knots per square inch, these rugs use a wool pile on a cotton foundation. Higher-grade Indo-Kashan rugs frequently incorporate premium New Zealand wool for added softness and sheen, and may include silk highlights that enhance the depth and shimmer of the floral detailing.
