Overview:

We custom-made this denim-blue kilim in the Moroccan Akhanif style where the designs are embroidered on the rug. This style originates from the Ait Ouaouzguite region in the south-east of Morocco, in the arid lands south of Ouarzazate. This piece features a subtle checkerboard pattern and within each square is a small embroidered design, reflective of the local weaving lexicon. While many of these symbols have lost their meanings over time, some of the ones that still hold meaning relate to the movement of the sun, moon, stars, and the local ecology. It makes sense, as these rugs are woven in agrarian regions and often reflect the needs, desires, and priorities of the weavers.
