About Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks

These sleek and graceful beauties are found around the world in warm, temperate, and tropical coastal waters. Males grow to around 6 ft, females up to 8 ft. Their eyes and nostrils are found at either end of their uniquely-shaped head which enables them to see 360 degrees, and to pin down prey such as stingrays. The unusual shape likely increases surface area, enabling them to better detect electrical currents like fish muscles contracting for hunting. Historically, at certain times and locations, SHs would form groups numbering in the hundreds. Not much is known why they school yet remain solitary the rest of the time. We were fortunate to see them schooling in the Cocos and Malpelo Islands, and also in Los Revillagigedos, Mexico – a humbling, majestic sight that is increasingly rare due to illegal shark finning. Now, most known congregating areas are tragically depleted. These beauties were the first shark to be classified as endangered by IUCN.
