10th-11th century AD. Vikings were highly skilled metallurgists, and as a result, breaking metal had supernatural significance for them. Breaking ringjarn (iron rings) as shown on the Larbro Stone in Gotland Sweden, was thought to destroy the spirits of enemies. Similarly, Viking weapons and accouterments were broken for burial with their owners. This is a piece of a fine Viking warrior’s bronze bracelet, ritually broken. It is about 3/8” x 1” and hand-decorated with the lower portion of an anthropomorphic figure. Such figures are rare in Viking art and iconography. It is lightly worn from use and burial and has been professionally refurbished with a 24karat gold overlay and mounted to a gilt Sterling silver 18\" neck chain for modern wear. It comes with a certification of authenticity and is jewelry gift boxed.
