How to measure — Men\'s Elastic Waist Shorts
For the best fit, measure your body or a similar pair of shorts laid flat. Use a soft measuring tape and record measurements in inches and centimeters (1 in = 2.54 cm).
Waist — body: Wrap the tape around where the waistband normally sits (usually 1–2\" below your natural waist). Stand relaxed. For elastic waists, note both the relaxed and fully stretched circumference.
Waist — garment (laid flat): Lay the shorts flat. Measure across the top edge from one side to the other, unstretched. Double that number to get the circumference. Also measure when gently stretched to find the maximum fit.
Hip: Measure around the fullest part of your hips. For the garment, measure across the shorts about 1–2\" below the crotch seam and double the number.
Inseam: Measure from the crotch seam down the inside leg to the hem — this is the leg length from crotch to hem.
Front & back rise: From the crotch seam to the top of the waistband at the front (front rise) and at the back (back rise). Back rise affects rear coverage and comfort when seated.
Thigh & leg opening: Measure across the thigh 1\" below the crotch seam and double for circumference. Measure across the hem to find the leg-opening width.
Tip: If you’re comparing to an existing pair, compare each measurement rather than relying on numeric size alone. When between sizes, choose the larger for a more relaxed fit; size down for a trim look.
Materials — what to expect
Elastic-waist shorts come in a variety of fabrics. Below are common fibers and blends and how they affect comfort, performance and care.
Common blends: 100% cotton for a classic feel; cotton/polyester blends (e.g., 60/40) for easy care; synthetic blends with elastane for stretch and quick-dry performance. Always check the garment label for exact fiber content and finishes (water-repellent, quick-dry, etc.).
Model information
Photographed model: height 6\'1\" (185 cm), chest 38\" (97 cm), waist 31\" (79 cm). Wearing size: M.
Fit shown: regular/relaxed. The elastic waistband with internal drawstring allows for easy adjustment — if you prefer extra room consider sizing up; for a slimmer fit stick with your usual size.
Care guide (to keep it lovely longer)
- Machine wash cold with like colors on a gentle cycle to protect fibers and color.
- Use mild detergent; avoid bleach and harsh chemicals.
- Turn shorts inside out before washing to protect surface color and trims; fasten zippers and close any velcro.
- Avoid high heat — tumble dry low or preferably line dry or lay flat to preserve the elastic and prevent shrinkage.
- If ironing is necessary, use low to medium heat and avoid direct heat on elastic panels or drawstrings; use a pressing cloth for delicate fabrics.
- Avoid fabric softener on water-repellent or quick-dry finishes, as it can reduce performance.
- Spot-treat stains early with a gentle stain remover. Do not soak for prolonged periods if the fabric has finishes.
- Store folded in a cool, dry place rather than suspended for long periods to prevent waistband overstretching.
Quick checklist: wash cold → turn inside out → gentle cycle → line dry or tumble low → avoid high heat.
Style tips
- Casual everyday: Pair with a crewneck tee and low-top sneakers for an easy, everyday look.
- Smart-casual: Team a tailored elastic-waist short with a polo or short-sleeve button-down and loafers or boat shoes.
- Athleisure: Match with a performance tee or hoodie and trainers; choose a mid-thigh inseam for mobility.
- Beach & travel: Quick-dry fabrics double as swim-ready shorts — combine with a linen shirt or tank and slide sandals.
- Balance proportions: If the shorts are fuller, go slimmer on top; if they’re slim, a slightly relaxed top adds balance.
- Color & pattern: Neutral shorts (navy, olive, khaki, black) are versatile; for patterned or bright shorts keep tops neutral to let the shorts stand out.
- Length advice: Aim for a length that hits just above the knee for a classic look; shorter is sportier, longer reads more relaxed.
- Accessories: Keep it simple — a casual belt or tied drawstring, sunglasses and a minimal watch complete the outfit.
Remember: elastic-waist shorts are built for comfort — lean into that ease while keeping clean lines for a modern, put-together result.
