The Buddy Optical SUNY Glasses are a refined expression of Japanese eyewear craftsmanship, handmade in Sabae, Fukui Prefecture—a region globally renowned for its precision and heritage in optical production.
The SUNY model takes its name from the State University of New York and draws inspiration from 1960s Wellington-style frames, characterized by their balanced proportions and timeless appeal. A distinctive keyhole bridge adds both comfort and a subtle vintage detail, enhancing the overall aesthetic.
Crafted from high-quality cellulose acetate, the frame offers durability, flexibility, and a premium feel. This model also marks Buddy Optical’s first acetate frame available in multiple sizes, ensuring a more tailored fit.
The smoke-tinted lenses provide a light filter, making them ideal for overcast or partially sunny conditions, while still allowing enough light for versatile, everyday use—including indoors. The lenses can also be easily replaced to suit personal preferences.
Designed by Gen Ikehara, each pair reflects a careful balance between vintage inspiration and contemporary design, resulting in eyewear that feels both classic and modern.
Size S• Lens Width: 40 mm• Lens Height: 35 mm• Frame Width: 130 mm• Bridge: 22 mm• Temple Length: 145 mm
Size M• Lens Width: 43 mm• Lens Height: 37 mm• Frame Width: 135 mm• Bridge: 25 mm• Temple Length: 145 mm
Fit Notes: Choosing between Medium (M) and Large (L) depends on your face width and by comparing with a pair of glasses you already own. Medium generally suits average faces, while Large is better for wider faces or if you prefer a more oversized look.
If you already have a pair of eyeglasses at home, you’re one step ahead. In most cases, you’ll find a series of numbers on the inside of the frame that looks like this: 52 22 145. The size information can usually be found on the inner side of the temple, bridge, or ear piece.
What do these numbers mean?It’s simple:• 52 mm – lens width• 22 mm – bridge width• 145 mm – temple length
If your glasses don’t have these measurements, you can easily measure them yourself using a tape measure. Once you have the dimensions, compare them with our size chart. If they’re similar, you’re good to go—it should be the right fit for you.
