The chair was designed in 1935 by the Finnish architect, urban planner, and designer Alvar Aalto and is still produced today by the company Artek, which Aalto founded in 1935 together with his wife Aino, the art patron Maire Gullichsen, and the art historian Nils-Gustav Hahl. This design also quickly gained popularity – because, unlike other designers of his time, Aalto refrained from using metal and instead employed birch wood, which was widely available in Finland and affordable even for lower-income families. This particular chair is an original from the 1940s and is in very good vintage condition.
